This special issue is dedicated to the FOSSACS 2008 conference. The PC handled 124 papers among which 33 were selected for presentation at the conference. We invited the authors of the best selected papers to submit a fully revised and expanded version of their work to LMCS. The received submissions have been subject to a normal reviewing process consistent with the standards of LMCS. The outcome of this editorial process is a collection of 3 papers representative of the research topics currently considered in the FOSSACS conference.Roberto M. Amadio
